SmartWatches – IoT – Soli
When the smart watches were first introduced they sounded bizarre to me. Why would you want something on your wrist when everything is going well with the phone?!. Technology has already made people shy away from talking to each other, and introducing smart watches has only taken this a step further. All those memes are becoming true! Having said this, I am sure it is eventually going to be big, if it goes in the right direction. With the electronics getting smaller and smaller, more of it can be packed in a smaller space. Today the Apple Watch and the other Smart watches pack a whole phone-level feature right in our wrist. However, these watches can’t act alone. An Apple Watch or the Android smart watches need the smart phone/WiFi to be fully accessible. Technology in this area will really find a breakthrough when these devices can function like phones without the need for bluetooth tethering with a smart phone or WiFi availability. It should have a LTE set up and everything should be possible with just the smart watch.
With this in mind, there is great potential for integrating the IoT devices today with the Smart Watches. Imagine having an entire energy management system telling you the power consumption at your house with ways to reduce the energy consumption – right from your wrist?! Mind blowing, isn’t it!? I am sure all the technology experts are already building their apps and what not to add functionality to the smart wearables. Alarm.com’s (https://www.alarm.com) Apple Watch app was released in the Apple’s unveiling of the Watch last year. Wearables are increasingly becoming a part of every techie and now is the time to get all of the IoT to integrate with them. There is also a potential for passwords being eliminated completely using biometric verification with the help of wearables. Apple has taken the first step forward with fingerprint verification in their devices and using this for Apple Pay. Although there is a lot of negativity about the need for Apple Watch and other smartwatches, this situation will change with more useful applications.
Google Soli is another breakthrough that can add incredible capabilities to these devices. Be it a smart phone or a smart watch or an IoT device today, integrating it with Google’s Soli is definitely taking it to the next level. Taking control of devices by just gestures is so cool; imagine the million possibilities that does not depend on any surface – it will change the future of Human Computer Interaction. Here is a quick video about Google Soli.
