Masters in Computer Engineering
Today, I graduated from Virginia Tech with a Masters degree in Computer Engineering. I submitted my thesis on ‘Design and Implementation of a Secure Web Platform for a Building Energy Management Open Source Software’.
Several building automation systems exist today that cater to small and medium-sized buildings. Several research publications exist that discuss integration of Internet of Things devices at the backend. However not many publications focus on development of an intuitive interface for the end-users of these building automation systems. Small- and medium-sized building owners/operators do not have in-depth technical knowledge about energy management. They should be provided with a system that allows easy translation of these technical information in a way that is easy to understand and intuitive for a general user.
My thesis focuses on the essentials for developing an intuitive interface for integrating Internet of Things for a common user. It provides the necessary principles involved in providing an asynchronous pluggable platform for any backend system that might use a message queue for communication with the backend platform. I have also touched on the basic security measures that need to be taken care of when a web platform for IoT integration systems are built.
