BEMOSS v1.x is finally out!
Heard of BEMOSS yet? It is an upcoming Open Source Building Energy Management that me and my student colleagues have been working on for more than a year now. BEMOSS stands for ‘Building Energy Management System Open Source Software’.
Of late, there has been a lot of hype about Home Energy Management Systems. With Google acquiring Nest Labs and Apple introducing the new Home Kit, and Smart Things growing so fast, I think Home Energy Management are growing big today. And almost all of the Cable TV companies have their own Home Security Systems today. Soon, they will be integrating their Home Energy Management Systems to their Cable Box.
And what about Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS)? Oh yes! They are already mature and there in every huge commercial building you see. They collectively operate all the building subsystems including the elevators, escalators, HVACs, Lighting Loads, Plug Loads etc. They can monitor all sensors and meters and participate in Demand Response operations.
But !!! They are so expensive that small- and medium-sized buildings cannot really afford it. So the US DOE funded a project that developed an Open Source Platform for Building Energy Management Systems that primarily focused on small- (<5000 sq.ft) and medium-(<50000 sq.ft) sized buildings. The fun part – it is Open Source. So it is a jackpot for developers interested in building their own applications for commercial buildings’ energy management.
Our team at Advanced Research Institute, Virginia Tech built a prototype of BEMOSS using all open source software tools and we released the first version last October. It is built on top of Volttron, an intelligent agent platform for Smart Grid developed by PNNL. It has been a very exciting journey for all 3 developers, working on the project day and night, discovering something new everyday. We have put in a lot of innovative ideas, and also made it very developer-friendly. So if you are developer excited about the Internet of Things and integrating it in a small/medium commercial building or making any little applications for a BEMS, just download the application from BitBucket and get coding!
